Among them is our very own Christine Groulx, Health and Safety Manager at 4Seasons Transportation and the 2022 Safety Person of the Year Award recipient. She’s joined by Dale Howard, Regional Safety Manager for Canada at Flying J Canada Transport (2024 recipient), as they discuss what it takes to build and sustain a strong safety culture in transportation.

The Importance of Training and Dedication

Christine emphasizes the critical role that training and dedication play in ensuring the safety of the children we transport.

“It's really important for the safety; our cargo is precious. We transport kids with special needs and it takes a lot of training and dedication from the individuals and our drivers.”

Ensuring the safety of students with special needs is a responsibility that 4Seasons takes very seriously. It requires ongoing collaboration with schools, families, and our Transfer Care Specialists to ensure the best practices are in place.

Building a Culture of Safety and Accountability

The conversation also dives into the importance of creating a culture of safety that extends beyond the road. Christine notes, “Employees, drivers, recognize that it’s just not about being focused on the road, but what’s happening behind you and how to keep everyone safe including the general public.” Safety at 4Seasons is about more than just the vehicle; it’s about fostering awareness and responsibility in all aspects of the work.

A key focus of the discussion is promoting a sense of willingness and accountability within the team. At 4Seasons, the goal is to cultivate an environment where everyone is motivated to contribute to a safer, more supportive workplace and community.

Christine also shares insights on the role of technology in enhancing safety. From in-vehicle cameras to specialized equipment for wheelchair-bound students, advancements in technology help monitor and support safe practices both in training and on the road. These tools provide valuable data that allows the team to continuously improve their safety protocols.

When it comes to recruitment and retention, Christine acknowledges the challenges but highlights the importance of a positive, supportive work culture. Many of 4Seasons’ drivers are retirees who appreciate the flexibility and meaningful work, which helps to maintain high standards of safety and care.

At its core, 4Seasons operates like a family, with staff supporting one another in their shared commitment to safety. This culture of support and collaboration is essential to ensuring the well-being of both our Transfer Care Specialists and the students they transport.
